It was Established in  1945. It is headquartered at Rome. In theory, acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy FAO is also a source of knowledge and information, and helps developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture,  forestry and fisheries practices, ensuring good nutrition and food security for all India is a member of FAO. It has over 194 as member states.

International food trade has existed for thousands of years but until not too long ago food was mainly produced, sold and consumed locally.
