DMPQ- What is the meaning of uniform civil code? Examine its relevance for a secular country like India.

Uniform civil code means that all sections of the society irrespective of their religion shall be Treated equally to a national civil code, which shall be applicable to all uniformly.  It shall cover the civil areas like marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, adoption and succession of the property.

Uniform civil code attainment is part of directive principle of states policy. So for India it is in tune with the vision of our constitution. It will give uniformity and will further enrich our  secular fabric of our country. Further our religious laws are tilted towards patriarchy and hence they fail to do the gender justice. Uniform civil code will ensure gender neutrality of law.

But it is difficult to implement UCC without taking everyone under consensus. Plurality of Indian society will get affected with its implementation. There is difficulty in arriving at making common laws for everyone. Minority feel threaten if issue of UCC is raised. Political class sometime in their vested interest do not arrive at making common law.

UCC has to be a self evolved in a country like India. There is need to debate and discuss about the mode of its implementation. Society has to be made more receptive about UCC.  Isolated approach like banishing triple talaq is a right step to achieve the constitutional dream of UCC.
